IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT A COUGH GOING AROUND OUR AREA

Unfortunately, we have had some cases of Canine Cough brought to our attention. Some of the pups had stayed with us without symptoms and developed symptoms after going home. A couple developed a cough while staying with us and had to be picked up by the mom/dad or family/friend before originally expected to keep the transmission as under control as possible. Still others have cancelled grooming and lodging stays due to developing a cough not related to lodging here. It appears to be a widespread concern in our area at this time.  

 

All lodging pups are required to have the Bordetella vaccination prior to lodging but it appears this may be a strain that is not necessarily covered by the current vaccination. Even with this, having the vaccination will keep the actual cough from becoming more serious in most cases. Most of the pups who have stayed with us have not developed a cough. In a couple cases, 1 pup became symptomatic but their sibling had no symptoms. It is similar to human Flu and Covid vaccinations, that even being vaccinated doesn't guarantee full immunity :(

 

If your pup shows any symptoms of canine cough after being with us please let us know and see your vet for treatment. If your pup shows any symptoms before a stay, please keep them home with a pet sitter or friend instead after visiting your vet.

 

 

Symptoms to watch for closely include:

 

  • A persistent, dry, or productive cough - sometimes sounds like a honking or appears to look like choking/gagging
  • Runny eyes or nasal discharge
  • Lethargy and reduced appetite
  • Rapid or labored breathing (which requires immediate emergency attention) 

 

 

We clean daily with products that kill Bordetella as well as other pet specific diseases to keep the spread as contained as possible as well as have a high air flow turnover but unfortunately nothing is 100%, especially with airborne illnesses.
